Carbon is an essential building block in many products we use in our daily lives.
Carbon-based fuels enable mobility and power many industries, particularly in some ‘hard-to-abate’ sectors, which are not easy to electrify fully.
And carbon-based chemicals make our modern lives. They are used to clothe billions of people, insulate our homes, and make our vehicles lighter and more fuel efficient.
These essential fuels and chemicals would not exist without the carbon embedded in their molecules. But almost all this carbon we use today is from fossil-based sources.
To limit global temperature increases, humankind urgently needs to transition away from fossil-based products.
And it is possible. By using biogenic carbon – or carbon in the residues produced by plants and trees – we can help accelerate this transition.
Our goal at C2X is to make these same products based on biogenic carbon in an affordable way so they can become a viable alternative for industries including shipping, chemicals and aviation.
Scaling up green methanol requires a step change in global production capacity. Towards 2050, the demand for methanol could triple to some 300 million tonnes per annum or more, with the majority being green methanol.
Green methanol can be produced by combining captured biogenic CO2 and green hydrogen (e-methanol) or by converting sustainable biomass via gasification (bio-methanol). Our gasification projects produce surplus biogenic CO2 that can be permanently stored geologically, creating high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2022 AR6 report states ‘The deployment of CDR to counterbalance hard-to-abate residual emissions is unavoidable if net zero emissions are to be achieved’– C2X are advancing the availability of this critical climate solution together with our mission to enable green methanol at scale.
C2X is a green molecules company.
Established in 2023, C2X aims to develop and operate green methanol production facilities accelerating the availability of green methanol in large quantities for the chemicals, aviation and shipping sectors.
C2X has entered a strategic partnership with SunGas Renewables which owns the leading biomass gasification platform. Biomass is one of the largest sources of low cost and sustainable biogenic carbon we have.
Together with SunGas, we are developing Beaver Lake Renewable Energy (“BLRE”) in Central Louisiana which will be one of the largest and lowest carbon intensity green methanol production facilities in the world. BLRE will generate significant new employment in Louisiana, commercialise SunGas’ proprietary technology, and monetise US resources through the sale of green methanol to international customers. C2X is also developing projects in Egypt and Spain.
C2X has an experienced team with backgrounds from chemicals, renewables, construction of mega-projects, shipping and finance and is majority owned by A.P. Moller Holding with A.P. Moller – Maersk as minority owner.
